Q: Where does it say in the New Testament that the Lord’s Supper is to be observed every Sunday?
A: In Acts 20:7, Luke wrote of the church at Troas, "Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight." From this verse we learn that the disciples assembled on the first day of the week, Sunday, for the purpose of "breaking bread" or observing the Lord’s Supper. Now some may say that this is all well and good but where does it say "every Sunday"? Well, it is clear that the early church assembled on Sunday (1 Corinthians 16:2). In Vincent’s Word Studies of the New Testament it says of 1 Corinthians 16:2 that the Greek word "kata" "has a distributive force, ‘every’ first day." The verse reads in English, "On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come." Paul says on the first day of the week but how many first days of the week did they come together? Every (kata) first day of the week. Acts 20:7 shows that the primary purpose of the assembling every Sunday was to observe the Lord’s Supper. Also please note that the apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians corrected the church in Corinth for their abuse or corruption of the Lord’s Supper (1 Corinthians 11:17-22). He then gave them instruction in the proper observance of the Communion (11:23-34). Notice what he says in verse 33, "…when you come together to eat." When was that? The first day of every week. If not, why not? If you come to the services at the Northside church of Christ and observe us partaking of the Lord’s Supper and ask, "by what authority are you doing this?" We would respond, "by the authority of Jesus Christ, who has been given all authority in heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18) as revealed in His word." But if we were to enter the services of most any denominational congregation anywhere we would not find people observing the Lord’s Supper, unless we happened to come in on one of those special occasions when it is served. And if we asked, "by what authority are you not observing the Lord’s Supper on this and every Lord’s day (Rev. 1:10)?" what authority would you answer with? Notice in 1co 16:2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. how often do you collect offerings?now the same wording is also used in acts 20 vs 7."upon the first day of the week".how often then do we partake of the Lords Supper?after careful consideration of these two scriptures, one can only conclude that this observance is done every LORDS DAY(SUNDAY).Also when he broke bread before his crucifixion he assembled with his disciples and broke bread and fruit of the vine representing his body and his shed blood.1co 11:24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me 1co 11:25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.How often do we remember Christ every Sunday.also Paul waited 7 days to partake of the Lords Supper.which was a Sunday!
